Medrese in Anatolia From The 11th to 16th Centuries: The Articulation of Politics, Education and Architecture (9786057523730)

To do this study I was encouraged by my esteemed master supervisor Prof. Dr. İsenbike Togan. She made significant contributions to my academic development by directing me to search and read interdisciplinary studies. Therefore, I started focusing on architecture, education and politics. As a result of taking interdisciplinary courses during the master education, I decided to research on medrese education and its architecture in relation with politics during the classical period of the Ottoman Empire. At the end, a valuable master thesis emerged with the important contributions of Prof. Dr. Isenbike Togan and Prof. Dr. Ömür Bakırer in the year 2000. It was awarded the second prize among the master's theses defended on history issues in 1999-2000 by the Monthly Encyclopedic Journal of History and Society in 2001. An article partially produced from the thesis and published by Journal of Education and Future, year 2012 and also it was presented at 1st International Scientific and Vocational Studies Congress in 2017. This book has been deriven from my master thesis written in 2000. It analyzes the political structures of pre-Ottoman and classical Ottoman Anatolia and examines how the polical structures of these two periods shaped and changed the medrese architecture and education. In this context the pre-Ottoman fragmentary political structure and along with this structure the medrese as an institution of this period are discussed. The classical Ottoman political structure and its relation with medrese are also examined. In the final part of this study, the impact of the political structures on the medrese architecture and education is studied with a comparative approach. This thesis aims to present whether there was a relationship and what was the extent of this relationship between the political structures of these periods and medrese architecture and education. It is a study reflecting how necessary and valuable the interdisciplinary studies on education, architecture and politics are.
